Book Club

"The Veg London monthly book club meet for September was held at Mildred's and the book of the month was "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro. Despite not having read the book I was encouraged to turn up as the book was only discussed for part of the meeting, it was a social night out and often people who hadn't read the book turned up anyway.

On this advice I arrived a little late, to find a dozen vegetarians tucked into a corner of Mildred's finishing up their mains. For those of you who haven't been, Mildred's is a small cosy, yet incredibly busy vegetarian restaurant in Soho. They offer a varied menu with plenty of vegan and gluten free options, and a rather delectable dessert menu.

Despite arriving late, the book discussion had yet to take place, so once dessert was ordered (for most it was a delightful stem ginger tofu cheesecake) the book was discussed. After a brief plot summary was given a range of topics from the texts were discussed, what people liked, disliked, how it was interpreted and how it related to reality. The conversation flowed freely and despite not having read the book I enjoyed hearing every one's thoughts on it.

After the cheesecake was finished and it got later into the evening, we departed Mildred's and a few of us went to the pub to continue the conversation over beer. All in all a wonderful relaxing evening. Maybe next month I'll get around to reading the book!"

Brighton

"After meeting new friends and old at Brighton train station we headed off for lunch at The George. It was a bright sunny day so we enjoyed a lovely veggie lunch (and the odd beer) in the pub garden. We soaked up the sunshine on the beach before the group split in two. Half went to the Brighton Pavillion for some culture. The other half went for vegan ice-cream and shopping... The group re-convened for cream tea at Food For Friends before heading home, tired, happy and full of great food. A truly wonderful day, with great weather, great food and great company..."
